Join the Team: The Community Trauma Response Team is seeking 15 to 20 culturally relevant community advocates who are willing to commit to a weekly call time. As a community volunteer, you will undergo comprehensive community response training, pass a background check, and actively engage in ongoing monthly supervision and training. Once trained, you will be part of a responsive team available to support and assist community members during traumatic incidents in Tacoma.
Volunteer: To become a Community Trauma Response Team volunteer, please complete the registration form. All volunteers must successfully complete an initial response training, undergo a background check, and actively participate in ongoing monthly supervision and training. Once trained, volunteers will be eligible to respond to traumatic incidents, providing invaluable support to community members. Together, let us make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by trauma and loss within our community.
Community Trauma Support and Referrals: Through our partnership, the Community Trauma Response Team is committed to offering immediate, practical resources and referrals to individuals in the community who have been impacted by trauma and serious loss. We focus on addressing emotional needs and mediating potential conflicts, allowing the Tacoma Police Department (TPD) and Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) to concentrate on their incident response duties.
How the Program Works: When a traumatic incident occurs, the response Team is activated to provide immediate support, referrals, and a safe environment for community members. Our team consists of 15-20 trained community volunteers and two dedicated staff members who can be mobilized by the Incident Commander.
In January 2023, the City of Tacoma joined forces with JCW & Associates, the operators of Tacoma Cease Fire, to establish the Community Trauma Response Team. This collaborative effort aims to provide a compassionate and supportive response to traumatic incidents within our community.

Ongoing monthly supervision and training provide opportunities for volunteers to enhance their skills, receive guidance, debrief on experiences, and stay up-to-date with best practices in trauma response. These sessions may involve case discussions, role-playing exercises, workshops, and guest speakers.
The specific protocols for mobilizing volunteers may vary depending on the Community Trauma Response Team's operational structure. Typically, volunteers may be notified through a designated communication system or call tree, where the Incident organizer activates the team members based on the nature and severity of the incident.
The practical resources and referrals provided by the team can include connecting individuals with mental health professionals, social service agencies, support groups, community hotlines, and other relevant community resources. The exact resources and referrals may depend on the specific needs and available services in the Tacoma area.

This can be achieved through ongoing cultural competency training, diverse volunteer recruitment, partnerships with community organizations, and actively seeking feedback and input from community members.
While specific prerequisites may vary, typically, volunteers should be committed to supporting their community, willing to undergo training, and pass a background check. Some programs may have age restrictions, require a certain level of emotional resilience, or request a specific time commitment from volunteers. It is advisable to review the application requirements or contact the Community Trauma Response Team directly for more details.
